Show Freshman basketball 1921-1922 RESHMAN basketball took a great boost when thirty-one athletes reported for practice soon after the holidays. Under the direction of Freshman Coach Fons Thorum elimination practice was conducted and after two Freshmen were chosen to represent the Varsity, eight men were selected to constitute the Frosh squad of nineteen twenty-five. "Swede" Brady by his heady playing was elected by the squad to uphold the honors of captain. Three times a week the Greenlings rubbed shoulders with the Varsity basket shooters and more than held their own in the scoring line. January 25 the squad imet the fast West High team in the latter's gym and after holding a safe lead for all but two minutes of the game were finally nosed out by a 34-29 score. This was the only defeat suffered during the season. The L. D. S. U. division championship team was met and defeated in the Deseret gym on Feb. 3 to the song of 27-35. On Feb. 8th another division championship team was vanquished 23-26 at Springville. Granite High School took defeat after an exciting game played at Granite by the score of 31-21. "Speed" Morrison played in his own peculiar way during the process of this struggle. On Feb. 17th the entire squad exhibited Stirling traits of pioneer days by being "tucked" to Grantsville for a battle with the local High School. Outside of cold showers, paper towels, pretty girls and nothing to eat the trip was uneventful. "Hefty" Boyce and "Pat" Patterson on the guard lines showed how much encouragement could be offered opposing forwards without allowing them to score. "Lindy" scored high in a cream puff eating contest. In the final game of the season Boxelder, another division champion, was humiliated by a 28-39 score. The squad which upheld the basketball honors for nineteen twenty-five consisted of Kenneth Brady, Wilson Morrison, Claude Boyce, Lindberg, Nicolson, Olson;. Patterson, Wheatley, with Virgil Caine acting as manager. These men should strengthen greatly Utah's chances for a winning team next year as their knowledge and willingness marks them as one of the strongest Frosh aggregations seen at Utah.
