Show Captain "Harve' ¦ "Hank" Football at the University in 1921 went through a season of varied fortune. It was along in the middle of September that Coach Fitzpatrick rounded up the has-beens, would-bees and ought-tos and took them on a conditioning trip to- Brighton in the Cottonwoods. Two weeks of 'roughing it' brought back to the institute a tanned and hardy gang of potential gridsters of all sizes, shapes and abilities. Immediately after the opening of school the outfit was cut down to the number of an ample varsity squad and the season was on. It is not to be understood by this that the team was wthout success, far from it. Utah's athletes beat some powerful organizations in the season and showed up well against others. Their showing in some of the games was, by comparison, much better than that of teams that later handed the Crimson the short end of the score. On October 15, the Wyoming Cowboys appeared here for the opening game of the season. Coach Fitzpatrick's proteges stepped out with a lot of stuff and sent the formidable and highly touted Cowboys back to the wilds and they were a sadder and a wiser bunch. Fourteen to two was the score of that game. Just one week of respite was allowed the players and on October 22nd they went to Colorado Springs. On that date they exactly duplicated their feat of the week before. On October 29th Utah entertained the Idaho University of Idaho athletes on Cum-mings' field. The big Moscow athletes were given all the goods by the dopesters, who, strange to say, w shot wide of the mark. After playing two periods l equal terms, Utah's gang went over the top and won seventeen to seven. A fumbled ball gave the ¦Spot" visitors 7 points. ¦ n 'Mac" Claire" 'Walt" "Jim" Digital Image © 2007 University of Utah. All rights reserved. |
