Freshman Football Learn 1921-22 ITH the coming of football weather, twienty-seven heroes of high school gridirons, with the plaudits of the bleachers still ringing in their ears, reported to freshman coach Fons Thorum for their first initiation to collegiate athletics. With great energy the process of grooming the traditional "cannon fodder" for the Varsity was begun. Soon the big green eleven shaped itelf and received its first baptism in collegiate football fire. More than once, a green jersey crossed the Varsity line. On October 19, the Frosh began a strenuous schedule. With captain Dick Iverson in lead, the Frosh journeyed to Provo to do battle with the B. Y. U. Varsity. The score finally stood 17 to 0 in favor of Utah. Our traditional enemies, the Aggie Frosh, were met on November 11 and despite the fact that Utah gained three times as many yards as the Aggies, the score at the end of the game was 6 to 7 for the Aggies. Granite high school was met and vanquished on November 19 to the tune of 49 to 7. In a great comeback, the B. Y. U. Varsity nearly triumphed over the freshmen in a return game on November 21. More consistent playing and a plunging backfield for the freshmen turned the tide and Utah won again 14 to 16. The annual Frosh-Pocatello Tech game was played on Thanksgiving day in the enemy's territory .before a record crowd. The game was a thriller, and every man showed that old Utah "do-or-die" spirit which had battled the Varsity to a stand-still and made "Utah Fight." Against a highly touted team, the greenlings struggled for four hard-fought quarters, and only penalties stopped thprn from scoring twice. The game was won in the last three minutes of play when Denzil Lee booted a clever goal against the wind scoring three points for Utah, and winning the game. The class of 1925 is proud of its football squad and looks for continued success throughout their college career. Page 180 Digital Image © 2007 University of Utah. All rights reserved. |
