Show c/4 Chronicle History of {he University of Utah On February 25th, 1850, the Provisional Government of the State of Des-eret enacted a law which incorporated the University of Deseret. This act was ratified October 4th, 1851, by the Legislature of the Territory of Utah. By this charter all authority was vested in a chancellor and board of twelve regents, appointed by the Governor. Orson Spencer was chosen as first Chancellor. In November, 1850, the University was opened but in 1851 instruction was discontinued and not resumed until November, 1867. The institution was reorganized in 1869 and under the direction of Dr. John R. Park work of classicial, normal and scientific nature was carried on. In 1892, the new charter granted by the Legislature changed the name from the "University of Deseret" to the "University of Utah." By the Legislative enactment of 1911 the Board of Regents was increased to fourteen, including the President of the University and the Secretary of State, ex-officio. The University, in 1894, received a grant from the government of a sixty acre tract of land on the Fort Douglas Military Reservation, to which was added thirty-two adjoining acres.
