However, nitrate deposits are not known to occur anywhere in the area. £al.t'_ Salt deposits are present below the surface in Gypsum and Paradox valleys and a little salt has been produced from a salt-water well for a particular local and temporary use. In the absence of local work there is no prospect of the development of the salt deposits. Bui.lding_ A quarry for building stone was developed s_tone[ _ _ at an early date in the granite found in Unaweep Canyon. Production was very small and for many years none has been reported. Other kinds of building stone could be found. In recent years, however, there has been no demand for building stone of ordinary quality. Clay_ Clay suitable for the manufacture of brick probably i^s present, but the location with respect to market is unfavorable for any substantial utilization. Gygsum_ Much gypsum occurs in Paradox Valley and Gypsum Valley and some along the Dolores River near Gateway. Attempts have been made to exploit the deposits near Gateway, but production will be restricted to the limited local market for Gypsum products, chiefly plaster.
