The vanadium reserves in Northern Rhodesia are dependent on the reserves of zinc-lead ore which have not been made public, but a continued production of by-product vanadium is a distinct probability, so long as production of zinc and lead is maintained. It is likely that the vanadium produced will continue as in the past to go tc European consumers, and little if any can be expected to be available for export to the United States. United States The sources of vanadium in the United States are (1) sedimentary deposits, (2) vanadates in oxidized zones and in association with lead mineralization and, (3) as a by-product recovered in the treatment of phosphate rock in Idaho and Montana, Low-grade (under 0,1 per cent VgOg) vanadium-bearing shale beds and magnetite-ilmenite iron ores are regarded by some as potential sources of vanadium, but actual production from these is limited to experimental tests. Less Productive Sources. Occurrences of vanadates are known in a number of places In New Mexico and Arizona, as well as in a few localities in California, Nevada and Montana. The deposits are small and erratic and no deposit or group of deposits extensive enough to support a continuous operation has been found. A further handicap is that the |
