Show 39 Vanadium Deposits in Southwestern Colorado Definition of Area Southwestern Colorado as used in this report is an area about 20 miles wide bounded on the west by the Colorado- Utah line and extending from the Uncompahgre Plateau In Mesa County south to the general area of Dove Creek post-office in Dolores County on to the Dolores Plateau. Immediately west of the area the high, sharp-peaked La Sal Mountains stand out as a prominent landmark, and far to the southeast the rugged San Juan Mountains are visible from within the area. Access and Climate The nearest railroad shipping points from Uravan and Naturita, where mills for vanadium concentration are located, are Grand Junction, about 90 miles by highway north of the area, and Montrose, an equal distance to the southeast. The main highway is a secondary road that exr tends from Grand Junction through Unaweep Canyon to Gateway, thence along the canyons of the Dolores River and the San Miguel River, and over a divide to Montrose. During World War II some ore, particularly from the southern part of the area, was hauled by trucks to a mill at Monticello, Utah, and to Durango in Southern Colorado. Other secondary roads extend into different parts of the area, and mine roads provide access by trucks to the many mines and prospects. Periodic |
