I • * Totals 7,216.814 269.829 In 1932 the United States Vanadium Corporation closed the Rifle mine because, in addition to having an excess stock of vanadium concentrate on hand, the company had acquired the properties of the Standard Chemical Company in Southwestern Colorado where vanadium could be produced from stock-piles and developed ore at less cost than under conditions prevailing in the Rifle mine. The Standard Chemical Company was an important producer of radium in the years prior to 1920 and in its search for radium ore had developed substantial quantities of vanadium ore that were not commercial at the time. In addition this company had, in the course of mining for radium, stock-piled a large quantity of vanadium ore. Thus the purchase of the Standard properties by the United States Vanadium Corporation made available to it a supply of ore piled on the surface as well as ore blocked out underground. It is estimated that this supply of vanadium ore was sufficient for the anticipated needs of the United |
