T HE name of Anahuac, which was originally given to the Vale of Mexico only, from its principal cities having been fituated on little iflands, and upon the borders of two lakes, faking afterwards a more extenfive fignification, was ufed to denominate almofl: all that traCl: of land, which is known at prefent by the Name of /llew Spain (a). This vafi country was then divided into the kingdoms of Mexico, Acolbuacan, :flacopan, and Mi'cbuacan; into the republics of 'l'laxca//an, Cbo!ol/an, and Huexotzincot and feveral other difiinct fiates.
