Show banks at the close of the fiscal year are reported by the Indian agent , as follows : / Depmitidts. 1 Balances. SALE OF CHOCTAW AND CHICKABAW COAL *AD ASPHALT LANDS. In my last annual report a history was given of the attempt of the Department to dispose of the segregated coal and asphalt lands under the act of April 21, 1904. The time within which they could have been sold has expired, and section 13 of the act of April 26, 1906 (34 Stat. L., 142), provide- That all coal and asphalt lands, whether leased or unleased, shall be reserved from sale under this act until the esisting leases for coal and asphalt lands shall have expired or until such time as may be otherwise provided by law. Upder this provisionno action can be taken looking to the sale of these lands until the Congress grants authority. It is provided, however, by the cq-rent Indian appropriation act (34 Stat. L., 346) that the Secretary of the Interior shall make a practical and c!*haustive investigation "of the character, extent, and value of the coal deposits in and under " these lands, and that the information ' secured by him shall at all times be available for the use of the Con-gress and its committees; and he is authorized to expend $50,000 for this purpose, to be taken from funds belonging to the Choctaw and Chickasam nations. SALE OF SUBPLUS LANDS. By the act of April 26, 1906 (34 Stat. L., 143), it is provided that when allotments have been made to all the members and freedmen of the different tribes the residue of the lands of each nation not reserved or otherwise disposed of shall be sold by the Secretary under regulations to be prescribed by him. No person will be allowed to purchase more than 640acres, and the land can not be sold for less than its " present appraised value." COLLECTION OF REVENUEB. a . For several years the Unitkd States Indian agent for the Union Agency has been charged with the duty of collecting all taxes, royal-ties, and permits in the Creek and Cherokee nations. By the follow-ing section of the act of -4pril 26, 1906 (34 Stat. L;, 141), he is now required to make collections in the other nations as well.: SEC. 11. That all revenues of whatever character accruing to the Choctaw.
