Show CHAPTER 50 ~ Clubs 'and Civic Organizations ~ I n the earliest years virtually every·good thing that came about in Lehi resulted from the cooperative efforts of members of the local Mormon ward (organized 1851). "The church was our life," remembered Ethel Ross Watkins, born in Lehi in 1885, "That's where we got our pleasure and our fun - that's all we had."l Church organizations such as the Lehi Choir (organized in 1852), Sunday School (1866), Relief Society (1868), Young Ladies' Retrenchment Society (later Young Ladies Mutual Improvement Association1875), Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association (1875), Primary Association (1878), Old Folks Committee (1892), and Missionary Wives Society (later known as Missionaries Wives and Mothers Society and then Missionary Wives and Parents Organization1897), sponsored nearly all community functions. Lehi Dramatic Club Lehi Home Dramatic Company The Lehi Dramatic Club, organized during the winter of 1854-55, was the town's first civic group. For many years this thespian society and its successor, the Lehi Home Dramatic Company (organized 1895), sponsored scores of amateur theatrical productions. Typical of their works was the August 1901 play, Triss the Pet of the Rockies, produced as a Tabernacle fundraiser. According to the 29 August 1901 Lehi Banner the production dealt "with life in the rockies [and] is full of snap ginger and funny situations." Under the direction of Oscar Handler, the cast of players included Rob Cutler, Thales Edwards, S. W. Ross, Ben Firman, Charles Crabb, Sadie Stoddart, Sadie Davis, Edith Cutler, and Emma Austin. John Winn. 2 :J ,lee Clubs The Lehi Glee '- " formed in September 1890, like the Lehi Literary Club lasted only one year . Officers were Andrew Fjeld (president), Henry Lewis (vicepresident), W. F. Butt (secretary and treasurer), Henry Simmond, John L. Gibb and Joseph Broadbent (committee). Other members of the organization included Andrew A. Anderson, Brig Anderson, Hanna P. Anderson, Olena Anderson, Affie Ashton, Joseph S. Broadbent, Edward Edwards, Edward Evans, Sophia Evans, Lucy Fox, Libby Fox, Nellie Fox, Belle Gibb, George Glover, James M. Kirkham, John Y. Smith, Edward Southwick, Ada Trane, Mary Waniass, Emma Webb, and Laura Webb. 3 The Areo Glee Club, organized in 1908, performed in various church programs, social entertainments, and political rallies for a number of years. Its members included Edna Dorton, Flossie Dorton, Maude Kirkham, Emelie Osterloh, Evelyn Roberts, Anna Stoddart, Dulcie Webb, Amy Whipple, and Selena Winn.4 Fraternal Organizations Fraternal societies, somewhat like the English "friendly societies" of the 1500s, are associations of persons (usually men) who are drawn together by common interests.
