' :uE-F-u ‘ Egg-g"- ' Bethesda Dear Dre Header: Many apologies for not having earlier replied to your letter of January 7, 19h9, furnishing the information requested in the proposed ‘ "Award of Grant-in-Aid for Cancer Research Construction" at the Units _ , versity of Utah; The letter was received Just at the time the IE it 1h, Maryland ‘ Legislature convened and we were not prepared 'to state how much money might be made available for construction of the Basic Science Building for Medicine. You will recall that we had talked earlier or adding the federal appropriation to our state appropriation for the purpose of erecting a complete medical research laboratory, one wing cf which would be used for cancer research° - ‘ p' ' The legislature did not appropriate money for the large Basic Science Building, but the plans tor such a building are being pro-a pared at the present timeo We have nonr instructed the architects to concentrate first on completion of the plane for the wing or the building to be known as. a Cancer Research Building and to make this wing complete for, the purposes for which it is intended, At some later time, when funds are available for the entire building, the Cancer Building which is being designed now will become a wing of the ‘ larger building. For the present, however, the entire cost of: con» struction of the Cancer Building will have to be borne by the grants. in-aid for cancer research construction as indicated on the enclosed form which you sent us" It 'should be possible for us- to proceed with construction of this building the latter part of the calendar year if funds for the purpose are awarded by your agencyo , |
