Show 316 FACUETY COUNCIL April 5, l9h8 The regular meeting of the Faculty Council was held Monday, April 5, 19h8 at h p.m. in Room 305, Park Building. President Olpin presided. Minutes Minutes of the meetings of march l, 1948 and march 29, 1948 were approved as circulated. Dr. Davenport moved their approval, Dr. Newby seconded the motion, and voting was unanimous. EQLl‘Qall All members of the Council were present except: Max Lund, Gail Plummer, ' LeConte Stewart, John L. Ballif, Henry Eyring, Avard Fairbanks, Leon D. Garrett, Joseph P. Thaw, Dilworth walker, John T. wahlquist, and Richard Young. Alternates present were: Helen Mhrshall for Max Lund; Edwin R. Clapp for Gail Plummer; Commander Horace Myers for Captain Thew. WGraduate LOWE; amiss .______.Ph-D. !8 President Olpin read a preposal from Dean Eyring, chairman of the Graduate Council that there be a ruling that people of the rank of Assistant Professor or higher not be allowed to receive the Ph.D. degree at the University of Utah. Report 9; Committee on Faculty welfare Egg; Dr. Elroy Nelson, chairman of the Faculty Council Committee on Annuities and Salaries, submitted the report of its Committee on the advisability of establishing a Faculty welfare Fund. His Committee recommended that the Faculty Welfare Fund not be established, since the majority of the faculty are already participating in various other welfare organizations; and the difficulties presented in the collection and administration of such a plan seem to outweigh the advantages. Dr. Cottam.moved acceptance of the report, Dr. John R. Lewis seconded the motion, and voting was unanimous. Report 93} Egg Cross Drive. President Olpin read a letter from Mr. Parry Sorensen stating that the University faculty had exceeded last year!s donations to the Red Cross. He felt that the faculty should be commended for its contribution. Announcement 2; Committee on Faculty Evaluation The President announced the personnel of the Committee on Faculty Evaluation, which he had been instructed to appoint in the meeting of March 1, l9h8.
