Show 37h long time considerations The Umvareitv‘ia vans:ion pn;33«:y, sick leave, and retirement find are all definite advantaged» and all the workmen scan to agree that the naming conditions ; " _' at the University are both favorable and agreeable, the _ ‘ ‘ only difficulty is with salaryo . While sane salary increases are available within next year's budget, and while you have authorized me to effect some morge'ncy increases outside the budget strut-v ‘y ture,I fear. these alone are inadequate to pacify the men ‘ intheir present state of mind, particularly since no . increase is contemplated for the great nadority and since those receiving increases will doubtless be disappointed in the amount. I hawe been casting about for some means of in» proving thelot ofthese workers without adding additional drains on University finances. It seams possible that non» academic workers udght profit from volunteer assistance :fron various scadenic departments, particularly by the 3 ' departments of Home Economics, Medicine, Business and per- ‘ hops several others. Occasional well chosen lectures at aemieeocial gatherings of the workers and their wives night decnssso the umber of unwise family purchases, give time» 1y information on current marketprices, improve family . . health, and generally increase the ability of fanilios to ‘ 11Ve better on the salaries they now make. ‘ ' ' Promise of those advantages alone, howewer, will probably not seen sufficient oomensation to the men at this time. If in addition to the above, however, the men themselves engaged in a certain mount of cooperative buyeing with acne unofficial guidance from University employees, Iam hopeful that within a few months the fornsr high" morale could be restored to the craftaxnon of the Buildingeand GrOundo Department . » ~ I an aware the cooperative flying is frowned upon, and with cause, by some competitive tax paying businesses. It is not suggested that the University engage in the cooperetiwe, or become involved in it in any way, or perform our official acts in connection with it. 3 It is proposed, homer, that occasional wholly Voluntary help be secured from various departments in order to effect savings. to a. group of University employees, which " "savings it is hoped will to some extent compensate these yeesfor the present differences between University 33nd"andindustrial rates of pay, ' |
