One was signed by Colonel Black, which called attention to the inadequate number of students enrolled in Military Science and Tactics. Because of the possibility that the ROTC Unit might be withdrawn.from the Univ» ersity owing to insufficient registration he prOposed that a study should be made to require all freshman and sophomore males who are physically'fit to take one of the three defense courses offered on the campus, namely, Naval Science, Artillery or Air Science; and further that freshmen who are graduates of the Junior ROTC program be excused from the requirement at the University in their freshman year; and that veterans with one or more yearis service be excused from.both years. Another letter signed by Professor N. P. Neilson, Head of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and.Recreation, recommended that Physical Education and military training he made compulsory for all freshman and sophomore male students who are physically fit. They would be required to pursue this joint course for five hours per week and would receive three-quarter hours of credit-~two for Military or Naval Science and one for Physical Education. Male students unable to pass the physical examination required by Military or Naval Science would take Physical Education only. No action was taken at this time on these proposals.
