Show 757 The committee wishes to<:all to the attention of the Board that a great deal had already been done by the University administration to _ ‘reduce fire hazards upon the campus; a greal deal of credit should be given to President Olpin, Mr. woolf and the fire-marShall. A surveJ had " . been made of the whole campus to determine hazardsa -The installation of twentysfour hour telephone service upon the campus now makes possible i prempt action in case of fire at nights Campus petrol has been greatly improved. Fire extinguishers have been installed and fire drills , systematised especially in building 105.' Large accumulations of in~ ‘ . flammable waste and stored material have been eliminated; these are only a fewof the measures taken before the meeting of our committe.oo I If Building 105 on the upper campus seemed to the committee the. greats est problem. The wooden construction of this building with readily in~ flammable partitions, narrdw halls, wooden staircases and a ls.rge number of students of both sexes creates a.particu1ar problem. Fortunately ,5 "fl "there are no laboratories with open flames, etc., inthis buildingo The committee is of the oninion that the ladder type of fire escapes in this building is inadequate for safety. The committee recommends to the Board t-hat it authorize the construction upon the Outside of this buildihg stairway type covered fire essape in the number and position ‘ recommended by Mr. Wholf and the fire marshall. , TheHome Economics Building in the nursery department, in the '. opini.on of the committee has an inadequate fire escape. The committee recomnends that the Board authorise the changing of the present fire. escape to a better type recommended by Mr. Woolfc '~*» . The tap floor or the Medical School Building constitutes another Ihazard because of the narrow stairways of approach, the presence in the laboratories of inflammable and explosive gases and the necessary use of open flames. The committee recommends that the Board authorize the construction upon both the north and south ends at this building of metal type fire escapes. . _ . _ In the tour of the campus, minor hasard reducing measures were -encountered which will be immediately cared for by.the administration withOut necessity'of action by the Board.
