General An effort has been made to include all useful studies relating to the acquisition, management, and disposal of the public lands of the United States together with studies of speculation in those lands and early utilization of them. This is essentially a bibliography of land policies and not one of settlement, nor of the agricultural history of the public land states. Some works have been included for necessary background material though they do not touch on land problems. Other studies of a peripheral character from which some information has been drawn but which otherwise have little relevance for land questions are not here listed, though they appear in the footnotes.
