Lewis. Synopsis This report proposes detailed definitions of the consumptive use of water in irrigation. It also calls attention to differences hetween the basic T^p^TiiTig of consumptive use and its application to the farm, the project, and the valley. Common difficulties in making a dependable determination of consumptive use are enumerated and briefly discussed. Experimental observations of consumptive use of water in typical irrigated valleys of the West are reported. Introductory The rapid growth of American irrigation during the first quarter of the Twentieth Century has developed a keen public interest in a study of the disposal of irrigation water. This report represents a part of the results of the work undertaken by the Duty of Water Committee of the Irrigation Division. A progress report on this subject was presented at the meeting of the Irrigation Division at Salt Lake City, Utah, July 9, 1925, by O. W. Israelsen, Assoc. M. Am. Soc. C. E. The present report has been prepared by Prof. Israelsen and includes, in addition to the material previously presented, further experimental data on consumptive use in different areas and analysis of the results.
