As indicated in my letter to you of April 20, 1950, the information available to the Department of the Interior indicates that construction of the tunnel route should not be undertaken at the present time. We do not have the necessary detailed information upon which to formulate answers based upon that route. We do have that information, however, for the Parker pumping route. The answers to the questions contained in the committee resolution are based first upon a cost of $596,000,000 and a 75-year repayment period. Each significant figure will be followed by one in parentheses which is based upon S. 75 as it passed the Senate, exclusive of the tunnel route; this involves an estimated construction cost of $708,780,000 and a reasonable repayment period, for the purpose of these answers assumed to be 75 years. The amount of $708,780,000 is derived from the cost estimates contained in the Interior Department report on the central Arizona project. |
