Question. What is the construction cost of the central Arizona project allocated to irrigation, per acre of the land to be "rescued" by the project? Answer. The specific estimates of the amount of land in the area of the central Arizona project now irrigated, the amount which probably could continue in irrigation on a permanent basis with the present water supply, and the amount which could be irrigated permanently if the present water supply is supplemented from the Colorado River are to be found in the report of the Department of the Interior on the central Arizona project. House Document 136, Eighty-first Congress, first session, on pages 139, 194, and 197. The Department of the Interior considers the project to be a basic support for the regional economy rather than a rescue of specific acreages of land. The word "rescue" in House Document 136 referred to the project as "A 'rescue' project designed to eliminate the threat of a serious disruption of the area's economy." It is stated in substance in House Document 136 that the economy of Arizona is largely agriculture; that the economy is being weakened because of a serious over- |
