Show ROYCEFLANDRO March 21, 2000 in the frrst part of the summer. Then I went back to New York, to New York University, and took a class in administration of youth camps and that sort of thing. Then I came back home and started teaching in the fall. During that school year I did some counseling. My classroom was right next to the counseling and office room for the pupil/personnel department of the school district. I did some counseling there. Then I was developing a camp. It was a youth camp for the school district, and I met a girl that I was to marry. She was an elementary teacher that I met at the Teachers Institute at a party. We dated, and we married in March. WINN: Of 1946? ROYCE: Of1949. I graduated in 1948,andstartedteachingin 1948. Then in 1949we married, and we started that camp together east of Provo. We had kids there in our camp all summer. Then in the fall we bought a little house in South Salt Lake. WINN: Your wife's name? ROYCE: My wife's name was Melba Ottoson. She was an elementary teacher in the Timpanogos School in Provo. She was born in Meeker, Colorado, and the family moved to Sandy, Utah. They did some work up in Bingham Canyon. She went to Bingham High School. Shehadoneyearatthe UniversityofUtahand therestwasatBYU. That was her education. We ran that camp, and it was very successful. We had horses, swimming, hiking, boating, and vesper services. We had USDA food and two cooks, and the boys and girls had to cook some meals. They also had nature studies of different types. We published a newspaper at the end of each week. There were kids of a different grade each week with planned activities. We had a staff of eleven people who directed them. I made that my masters degree thesis. In the fall of 194 7 we went to the University ofUtah and worked on that degree and graduated in the spring of 1950. To support us financially I had several assignments.
