Show ROYCEFLANDRO March 21, 2000 in the army." I said, "I want to go back to college." So I turned them down. They gave me another promotion over there, and that's what I mustered out on. That's the story as far as rank is concerned. I went back to the university. WINN: Did you get home before your brother? ROYCE: Yes,Ithinkso. Hewasmarried. Hewasmarriedsohewaslivingsomewhere. I don't really know. He didn't ever come back home. He was off somewhere. In terms of the timing, I don't know exactly when it was. I got home in September of 1945, and I was ready to go back to college. WINN: You got home just in time for school here. ROYCE: So I went back to college, and I went back into ROTC, and they made me a cadet colonel. I was the commanding officer of the cadet group. I was there as CO for two years, and then I got my commission. After that I went into the national guard. While finishing college I was an enlisted man, and I became a first sergeant in the "Sound and Flash" unit, an artillery unit in the Utah National Guard. Then I got my commission and was in the national guard. Then I went over into the army reserve and was later mustered out when I went to Indiana for an advanced degree. When I graduated from the University of Utah I became a school teacher. WINN: So you changed your major to education? ROYCE: Yes, to education, and I became a school teacher and a counselor. I went down to Provo, Utah, and taught there. WINN: What subject? ROYCE: I taught history. I was really in social science. I wasn't trained all that well in history, but I had other social sciences. I was teaching history there and learned a lot very fast. WINN: What grades were they? ROYCE: Senior high at Provo High School. The summerthatl graduated in 1948 I went back to--I hitchhiked from coast to coast and from Canada to Mexico. I did a lot ofhitchhiking 36 |
