Show ROYCEFLANDRO March 21,2000 me. But I learned there that I was getting D's and E's on my daily assignments, and I just decided I had to dig in a find a way to master this. I took that a couple of years and mastered it, and I was able to do all right in it, but I am not a linguist. All through my life I have had occasion to get into many languages as you might learn a little later, but that gave me a good background. I enjoyed my science classes, and certainly music and athletics. We developed a football team there and we played some of the other junior high schools. It was all informal and I played. We played a final game up at the University of Utah. Here we were junior high school kids. WINN: Other than athletics what kind of other extra curricular activities did you engage in? ROYCE: I was in the bowling club. I was in the booster club. I was involved in that, and the booster club was sort of part of student government. I was the president of the Audubon Club. I enjoyed mostly the hiking and looking at birds, but I also enjoyed the fact that it was coeducational. WINN: It was still junior high school? ROYCE: It was in junior high school, yes. WINN: You started to get interested in girls then? ROYCE: Oh, yes, and we had some very interesting groups at that time where we would play spin the bottle and post office and things like that. But we enjoyed going to the dances, and they were all supervised parties in peoples' homes. And we had an enjoyable time. WINN: Did you carry on the same kind of activities at East High School? ROYCE: Somewhat, yes. Socially, weformedagroupthatmeteverySundaywhereby a person would be chosen to give a twenty minute presentation, followed by twenty minutes of question and answer, and then a general discussion after that to limit the whole thing to about an hour. Then we would have refreshments. People would go there without partners, but then would often have partners by the time they went away. This was on Sunday night. It was an excellent 4 |
