Show ROYCEFLANDRO March 21,2000 contact. It turned out to be some of the leaders of the school. It was very stimulating. A person could choose their own topic. It could be religion, a political position, an opinion on something, a scientific treatise, or various things. It was very, very stimulating. WINN: It sounds very interesting. ROYCE: It is a good thing for young people to do. WINN: We should have more of that today. ROYCE: We tried to get other people to do it. In my work with young people we have had some successes with it, too. I was active in the seminary program in the church there, as well as other things in high school. Ip my first year I played on the 11B11 football team. I was on the first string there. The next year I was on the 11 A 11 team. I was varsity and was able to play first string there. I enjoyed football. My classes there were, of course, chemistry and physics, social science, English--all those things. I decided I would not go out for basketball because I felt there were more things than just athletics that a person ought to be doing. So I was on the debate team. I was in plays, and operas, and also the a capella there. WINN: So you maintained your musical interest? ROYCE: So I could go on with other things. I didn't want to just be a jock, you know. I was out for the track team--the broad jump, and the hundred yard dash, and relay. I felt that I had a pretty broad experience in high school. I didn't want to get married. I found a girl that I really loved. She didn't want to go on to college. The man that played tackle next to me (I was a half-back and end) also found a liking for this girl, and I really loved him, too. They wanted to marry. It was sort of, wasitmeorwasithim? I said, 11Yougoahead. Ihavegotsomecollege work to do. 11 We kept in good touch, and they are just a wonderful couple. I could name who they are and all that, but they went on to have nine children. He became a principal of a high school. He did finish college later on. A wonderful, wonderful man. WINN: Your father, what did he do as an occupation the first time? 5 |
