Show ROYCEFLANDRO March 21, 2000 WINN: You did this just for fun? ROYCE: We did that for fun. WINN: You weren't being paid? ROYCE: No. For jobs we took care of a lot of--by we, I mean my brother and I--we did a lot of this together, Paul and I. We were like twins. We took care of people's lawns. We would water during the week. Then we would cut it, and edge it, and all of that. We did that even up into college. It was one of our ways. We also delivered newspapers and sold magazines. We had a regular route that we took. But when we were very small we took people's garbage cans in for them. We would go out and take their garbage cans in, and some would pay us and some wouldn't. But those are some of the things. We had lots of fun in the neighborhood playing "runsheep- run" and "pomp, pomp, pull away" in the winter. Lots of entertainment. WINN: I imagine you had a lot of church activities? ROYCE: Yes, we were very active in the church. WINN: Did your father join the church? ROYCE: No, he didn't ever join the church. He was a very religious man. He was involved in the Masonic Lodge in Salt Lake and the Argenta Lodge. Our family was somewhat athletic. The Argenta Lodge had an outing at Lagoon once a year. Our family--invariably every one of us would win the races we ran. They did it by ages. And they had prizes. My father and mother were so embarrassed because we would always win every year. Then sometimes we would have the youngest baby, or the largest family, or something or another. There was always something and they got so embarrassed. Also, the Crane Company had a reunion at Lagoon every year, and the same thing was the case there. WINN: Did your family have a car? ROYCE: Well, we had a company car. We started out with a Model T with Crane Company written on it. Then we got a 1931 Chevrolet two-door. Then we got a 1936 Plymouth. 7 |
