Show 13 shown on a map (PV-227) of the Coal Creek area. (See also pi. 2.) Carnotite was found on Coal Creek at an early date and prior to 1920 exploration for radium ore was active, but no production is recorded. Small shipments of vanadium ore are said to have been made to the Rifle mill prior to 1932, but evidently the results were not encouraging as there is no record of sustained production. A vanadium content of one to two per cent VgOg has been demonstrated in places, but the thickness of the ore bed is usually less than 12 inches and seldom as much as 24 inches, which is insufficient for profitable mining. No sales of vanadium-bearing land in the area are recorded and in the absence of commercial ore of any consequence, even though considerable exploration and development work has been done, it is the opinion of the writers that the mineral deposits of the subject lands in this area as of June 28, 1938, in the Coal Creek area, were without value. Neither deposit can be operated at a profit and no value can be ascribed to them. Lead oarbonate deposits are reported from this general area but they are in a national forest. |
