Show PURPOSE This report is an appraisal, with supporting data, of the mineral resources and reserved mineral rights, excepting coal, oil, gas and oil shale, in lands involved in a suit in the United States Court of Claims entitled The Confederated Bends of U_te Indians. Plaintiff, v. TJie United States of America. Defendants. No. 45585. The lands referred to hereafter as the subject lands were allegedly taken from the Confederated Bands of Ute Indians by the Congress of the United States by Act of June 28, 1938 (52 Stat. 1209), and therefore the values determined by the appraisal are for June 28, 1938. The subject lands aggregate approximately 4,500,000 acres plus the mineral rights of an additional 613,414 acres. This is so large an area that unusual problems were presented, and the magnitude of the task made it difficult to select the significant information from large amounts of data that became available and to keep the report from being too long and complex. It is believed, however, that all pertinent data are presented with sufficient maps, charts, illustrations, and tabulations to make a comprehensive presentation of the nature of the mineral resources and to give a sound basis for their value.
