Dept. of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, Division of Irrigation-Crop Report and Related Data, Federal Reclamation Projects (1956) p. 6-Horticultural Specialties Horticultural Specialties The one-eighth of the irrigated project area which is devoted to the culture of the intensive and highly important horticultural specialties-fruits, vegetables and nuts -produces crops valued at more than a third of the total project production. These are the dietary gems of our nation's agriculture-the protective, body-building foods needed for healthful living. The olives, avacados [sic], almonds, pecans, English walnuts, grapefruit, limes, naval [sic] oranges, tangerines, lemons, apricots, cherries, and fresh winter vegetables of all kinds are the delectable items which irrigation contributes to the nation's salad bowls. The 1956 production of fruits, vegetables and nuts exceeded the previous year's production by 22 percent and the average of the preceding 5 years by 34 percent. |
