Show -2- official Census definition of "Indian".* In addition, in the 1950 Census, a number of groups of mixed racial origin which have historically always been included in the Indian category were arbitrarily transferred to the residual category "Other races". This included such groups as the Croatans or Siouans of the Carolinas and the Houma of Louisiana. In Table 1, Indian Population by Place of Residence: 1950, corrections have been made in the reported Census figures for both of these under-report-ings. In round numbers the adjustments were: Indians as reported by 1950 Census 343,400 Arbitrary transfer from Indian category 30,000 Estimated under-reporting of mixed bloods 48,200 Total, as shown in Table 1 421,600 On Tables 3 and 4 hereafter there are also included about 2,600 intermarried non-Indians. Investigations in 1940 indicated that under-reporting of Indians was a factor of importance only in non-reservation areas. Within the vicinity of an Indian reservation the enumerator normally is conscious of the fact that an individual is an enrolled tribal member of one-fourth or more Indian blood, and so records him, even though in physical appearance he may seem non-Indian. All adjustments have, therefore, been made in the areas away from Indian reservations. It is probable that this results *This definition is "In addition to full-blooded Indians, persons of mixed white and Indian blood are included in this category if they are enrolled on an Indian reservation or agency roll. Also included are persons of mixed Indian blood if the proportion of Indian blood is one-fourth or more, or if they are regarded as Indians in the community. . . ." |
