Show ROBBERY According to the Uniform Crime Reports, robbery is the taking of or attempt to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force or threat of force or violence and/or by putting the victim in fear. Similar to murder rates, Utah's robbery rates have remained consistently below the national average for the years reported. Since 1983, the frequency of robbery has increased nationwide by 10%, while Utah has decreased by 12% (Table 103, Figure 63). Figure 63 AGGRAVATED ASSAULT Aggravated assault is termed as any unlawful attack by one person upon another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily injury. This type of assault is usually accompanied by the use of a weapon or by means likely to produce death or great bodily harm. Attempted assaults are included since it is not necessary that an injury result in order for the incident to be counted. National data show a considerable increase from 289.2 in 1982 to 441.8 in 1992. Totaling an estimated 1,126,974 offenses, aggravated assault in 1992 accounted for 58% of all violent crimes. Cities with a million or more inhabitants experienced a decline of 2%, while cities with populations of 25,000 to 49,999 recorded a rise of 7%. 1992 figures show aggravated assault incidents to be up nationally 24% from 1988 and 73% up from 1983 (Table 103, Figure 64).
