Show CEREBROVASCULAR DISEASE (ICD-9 Codes: 430-438) (1992 Total Deaths in Utah = 703) Death rates due to cerebrovascular diseases (stroke) continue to decline for both Utah and the nation (Table 37, Figure 26). Like Utah's death rate for diseases of the heart, Utah's lower death rate for cerebrovascular disease probably reflects healthy lifestyles (see Risk Factors Section). But unlike the death rate for diseases of the heart, Utah's rate for cerebrovascular disease is not declining as fast as the nation's rate, and has moved up to 93% of the national rate. Particularly important are screening programs to identify persons with high blood pressure, if such programs are followed by changes in lifestyle and by medications to control the hypertension once it is discovered. For both 1991 and 1992 Utah ranks slightly below the national median in the percentage of persons reporting ever having been told their blood pressure was high (Table 38). Hypertension Awareness (Percentage of persons who report having been told their blood pressure was high) Table 38 Year 1991 1992 Utah Median State Range of States 19.61 18.55 21.00 20.65 14.75-29.55 14.66-27.91 In spite of Utah's mortality rate, Utah ranks as the lowest state in the percentage of persons who reported having had their blood pressure checked within the past two years in 1991. However, this percentage improved slightly in 1992 (Table 39). Hypertension Screening (Percentage of persons who have reported having their blood pressure checked within the last two years) Table 39 Year 1991 1992 Utah Median State Range of States 92.30 93.76 94.43 94.67 92.30-97.29 90.48-97.01 Death rates in Utah from cerebrovascular disease are lower for females than for males except for the 1985-1987 period. Both male and female total death rates declined for the past decade (Table 40).
