Show VIOLENT CRIME "Violent crime" refers to any of four offenses: murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. All violent crimes involve force or threat of force. U.S. violent crimes reported to law enforcement in 1992 exceeded 1.9 million offenses, which was a 1% increase over 1991, a 23% increase over 1988, and a 54% increase over 1983. Rural and suburban counties showed increases of 6% and 2% respectively, while U.S. cities collectively showed less than a 1 % increase. For the same time periods, Utah exhibited a dissimilar pattern. Murder and robbery rates actually decreased in Utah from 1983 to 1992. On the other hand, rape and robbery in Utah have shown, respectively, 80% and 14% increases. Robbery, aggravated assault, and murder rates are well below the national level. However, the rape rate is slightly above the U.S. rate (Table 103). All the definitions and national data in this section are taken from the Uniform Crime Report,1 and the Utah data are taken from the 1993 Crime in Utah report2 released by the Department of Public Safety. Because the Uniform Crime Report for each year is not published until October of the following year, 1993 and 1994 national data were not available for comparison at the time of this issue of Utah's Health: An Annual Review. 1 U.S. Department of Justice.
