Show PER CAPITA PERSONAL INCOME Per capita personal income is calculated by dividing total personal income by total population. The high proportion of large, young families in Utah makes per capita income figures lower. When per capita income is based only on an adult population, Utah improves from 78% of the national average to 88%1 (based on 1990 data). Personal income per household shows Utah at 90% of the national average in 1990 (Table 8, Figure 10). Utah's per capita income as a percentage of the U.S. per capita income showed a narrowing between 1969 and 1978, from 79.5% in 1969 to 83.2% in 1978. After 1978, however, the gap between Utah and the nation began to widen. Besides large families, another factor contributing to Utah's lower personal income figures is a relatively low level of wages (see Total Personal Income per Household, p. 11). Utah's wages, which account for approximately 76% of total personal income, are only 85% of the U.S. average (see Table 14 p. 13).
