Show SUICIDE (ICD-9Code: E950-E959) (1992 Total Deaths in Utah = 262) From 1979 through 1991, Utah's age-adjusted death rates for suicide have been consistently higher than the nation's (Table 51, Figure 31). The Utah:U.S. ratio shows Utah to be about one-quarter to one-third higher on average than the U.S. Suicide rates in Utah increased from 1989 to 1990 and maintained a similarly high rate in 1991. Some suicides remain unreported, or are reported as some other type of death. So, for example, the 265 suicide deaths reported in Utah in 1990 may be lower than the actual number of suicides that occurred. Western states generally have had higher rates of suicide than the nation. Although Utah is higher in death rates due to suicide compared to the nation, it is lower than the mountain states region as a whole (Table 51). It is unclear why the mountain states region has a higher suicide rate than the nation. Suicide Mortality by Sex in Utah* (Age-adjusted Mortality Rates per 100,000 Population) Table 50 Years Total Male Female 1979-81 14.5 23.2 6.3 1982-84 14.8 24.2 5.8 1985-87 15.2 24.4 6.2 1988-90 14.7 23.9 6.0 From 1979 to 1990 the Utah numbers represent a three-year average because of the small number of deaths per year. Males and females differ dramatically in the rates of death by suicide (Table 50), with males being almost four times as likely to die from suicide. During the 10-year period examined, death rates for both sexes have remained fairly consistent.
