Show DISEASES OF THE HEART (ICD-9 Codes: 390-398, 402, 404-429) (1992 Total Deaths from Diseases of the Heart in Utah = 2,718) Utah's death rate for diseases of the heart is declining, as is the U.S. rate (Table 34, Figure 25). However, Utah's death rate is declining at a slightly faster rate than the nation's. Utah's lower rate may reflect the fact that a higher proportion of its population report engaging in physical activity (Risk Factors, p. 48), has a lower rate of poverty than the nation as a whole (see Poverty p. 14), and smokes less than does the nation's population (see Risk Factors, p. 55). Closely monitoring cholesterol levels is important in reducing diseases of the heart. Figure 25 Utah falls below the national median and is close to the lowest state in the percentage of persons who reported ever having had their cholesterol checked for 1991 and 1992 (Table 35). Possible explanations include biological differences, different socialization tendencies that affect how males and females deal with stress, and higher rates of smoking for males. Both male and female rates have decreased substantially since 1979 (Table 36).
