Show DIABETES MELLITUS (ICD-9Code: 250) (1992 Total Deaths in Utah =355) Death rates from diabetes mellitus are increasing for both Utah and the U.S. These rates declined from 1970 to 1980, but began rebounding in the early 1980's. Utah's increase has been so great (15% in the age-adjusted rate from 1981 to 1992) as to more than erase the improvement from 1970 to 1980 (Table 33, Figure 24). The U.S. increase since 1981 has been much smaller than Utah's. Utah's faster rate of increase seems unusual, given the percentage of people in Utah who engage in healthier lifestyles. It may be explained, in part, by genetics or eating habits. However, a substantial part of the increase in Utah and the U.S. rates was probably due to a change in death certificate procedures in 1989.
