Show ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS) (ICD-9Code: 042-044) (1992 Total Deaths from AIDS in Utah = 72) Both Utah and the nation have seen an increase in new AIDS cases from 1984 to 1991, although Utah's incidence rate remains below the nation's (Table 26, Figure 19). The Utah:U.S. comparison shows Utah to be at about one-third the rate of the nation in the number of newly reported cases of AIDS, although since 1991 Utah's rate has been closer to one-half the U.S. rate. AIDS-related death rates are higher for the U.S. than for Utah. Crude death rates have also increased between 1987 and 1991 for both Utah and the nation. Utah had a 55% increase in total deaths due to AIDS between 1987 and 1991, while the U.S. increased by 75%. Age-adjusted data are generally not reported for AIDS. However, by age category Utah and the U.S. have similar percentages of AIDS cases in their populations. The surveillance case definition of AIDS was expanded to include four new conditions, effective Jan. 1, 1993. This will result in a rise in AIDS incidence rates and AIDS-related deaths in future reports.
