Show NON-AGRICULTURAL EMPLOYMENT AND AVERAGE SALARY Utah's growth in non-agricultural employment, has been stronger than for the nation as a whole and even the other mountain states (Table 13). This might be expected to benefit the population in several ways. First, it should reduce unemployment, and hence the number of persons not having insurance through their work. This is discussed in the previous section. Second, it should reduce the number of persons who have given up looking for employment, and again reduce the number not having insurance through their work. Third, it might mean more competition for employees and hence higher wages and salaries to finance health care. Up to 1990, this was not the case (Table 14, Figure 12). Utah's average salary has not increased as fast as the U.S. rate.
