Show POPULATION BY SEX Females comprise a larger percentage of the total population than do males for both Utah and the nation (Table 4). This appears to be a consistent relationship since 1970. Although life expectancies for males and females have increased since 1970, females have consistently had longer life expectancies than males in both Utah and the nation (Table 5, Figures 7 and 8). This is reflected in the higher male mortality rates for many of the health status indicators (see Health Status section). Salt Lake County has approximately 42% of the state's total population. The next most populous counties of Davis, Utah and Weber include 35% of the state's population in one continuous band of urban development along the Wasatch Front. Each of these four counties has a well-established health care system. There are six other counties (Iron, Morgan, Summit, Wasatch, Grand, and Washington) experiencing rapid growth. This may be a concern for those providing health care within those regions, although the most difficult problems of geographic access may be in those counties with small populations which are not experiencing growth.
