Show The Cross Country SquadCross Country RunningFINE looking group of girls is that portrayed at the top of this page, the cross-country running squad. Their branch of athletic sports is the most firmly established of all outdoor sports, and is generally participated in by all who cannot play basketball, baseball, etc.Running is considered a most beneficial, all-round exercise, as it does not effect special muscles to the exclusion of others, but stimulates all parts of the body. It has an especially good influence upon heart and lungs and strengthens the powers of endurance. All girls unfitted for the more vigorous athletics must serve an apprenticeship in running until physically qualified to train for •other sports. For competitive reasons the club elects captains according to class designation and under their leadership the contests are carried on. The object of the competition is not to make the swiftest runs, but to be credited with the largest number of the prescribed kind. The girls set off at a steady pace, which is maintained over the entire course laid out by Coach Edwards. They are accompanied either by their instructor or some one authorized by her to see that the run is made in the proper manner. At the end of the season the squad having the best record is presented by Miss De Laney with a handsome banner upon which their achievement is recorded.<214) |
