Show Freshman ImpertinenceT IS not always the youngest member of a family that has the least history to relate; this has been proved by the class of 1913, whose fresh enthusiasm and earnest endeavor have already made themselves felt in all branches of collegiate life. The first year boys began their brilliant athletic career by decisively defeating the Sophomores in the annual flag rush. Not a Sophomore hand touched the coveted emblem when time was called. The Freshmen had six men on the University football team; five of these men played their positions regularly on the first team, and every one of them played a star game.In basketball also, the Freshmen were indeed pre-eminent; three men on the 'Varsity team and the entire second team being from our class. At this writing spring athletics have not been started, but is is already known that a majority of the candidates for these sports will be Freshmen. In class athletics, 1913 made an equally good showing. In football, our team won a very close second and proved to the victors that the Freshmen were worthy competitors. In the interclass basketball series, we led the race and easily won every game. The Freshmen have not yet met the upper classmen in baseball and track, but when the time comes they will not be found wanting. ,The social activity of the class has been displayed many times. After getting our class members acquainted with one another at the delightful party given at the beginning of the year, we all joined in and made our matinee dance prove the truth of the old saying, "The last's the best of all the game." Successful dances have beerf-giveu ,by the upper classes and it is our hope to conclude the social year with a dance which will not compare unfavorably with those of our more experienced rivals. In debate and extemporaneous speaking we have also shown our ability and have clearly demonstrated our belief in intellectual development.Altogether the year has been a very successful one and we feel confident that the class of 1913 will bear no mean part in the athletic, social and intellectual life of the University of Utah.(82) |
