Show derson, Spencer Felt, Clifford Ashby, Roger Powers, Harold Johnson, Ben Howells, John Crook, Earl Van Cott, Marion Tanner and Reese Howell.Rehearsals were as interesting as usual. Those new members who were not used to the expressive plainness of the head coach gasped at first and looked bewildered, but on being assured by the older players that everything was perfectly normal, they settled snugly down into the harness. A system of fines for tardiness was inaugurated for a while, but when it became plain that the manager would have to appropriate club funds to pay his penalties, the practice was discontinued. The first performance was staged at Bingham, As is usual with first performances the hour before curtain time was one of tense anxiety. The New York costumes-especially the hoop-skirts-wouldn't sit right; buttons were missing, buckles were loose, and Tom Wrench couldn't find his trousers. In the excitement everyone lost his voice, and there was a general run on Miss Babcock's pill-box. The makeups, too, were in an experimental stage. And to add to the difficulty, it was discovered that Mr. Ablet's face could not be decorated until his dimple stopped playing about his mouth. But this was not altogether unfortunate for it caused Mr. GofI to emit:"You can fill it with putty; You can fill it with clay. But Happy's fair dimple Will not go away."In spite of it all the performance' was unusually successful. Every one did well and O'Dwyer, with a face that out-crimsoned his Hibernian hair, captured the hearts of his fellow countrymen in the gallery. Notwithstanding the successful performance, the latter part of the night was spent in dread. The aerial tramway runs directly over the roof of the Elmerton hotel, and not a girl of the cast dared go> to sleep for fear she would be awakened by the shock of an ore-bucket crashing through the foot of the bed. But the crash didn't come, and next morning Manager Powers brought back his players and his pocket-book-the one none the worse and the latter considerably improved.POWERS HULLTANNER BITNER |
