Show ASKETBALLTHE record made by our 'Varsity five this year is one of which we may indeed be proud. This is only the second year that we have had a 'Varsity team and the standing to which we attained is exceptional, to say the least. We sustained two defeats, but the sting thereof was largely nullified by later developments. The basketball championship situation in Utah is in a curious state at present. To go back to the beginning of the season, on December 18, the 'Varsity defeated the crack Y. M. C. A. team 25 to' 21. In the league games which followed, we won all the contests, except those with B. Y. U. The first of the two was played in the University gym on February 5. To the shame of Utah be it said that the B. Y. U. rooters outnumbered those of Utah on our own floor. The boys played in winning form until the last few minutes of the game, when Provo shot three field baskets in rapid succession, gaining a lead that could not be overcome. In the second contest, held February 11 at Provo, our boys were badly defeated, losing the intercollegiate championship to Provo. Later in the season the Y. M. C. A. five won the State championship from B. Y. U. by decisive scores. The University then surprised the natives by defeating the Y. M. C. A. champions, thus winning the State championship.Inasmuch as the Y. M. C. A. defeated the champions of Colorado, and our team outclassed the Montana champion five, we feel some right to claim the intermountain title. On a basis of comparative scores, the 'Varsity outclassed all teams in the Intercollegiate League. The totals are as follows: U. of U. 445, opponents 198; B. Y. U. 300, opponents 155; A. C. 183, opponents 265; B. Y. C. 175, opponents 326; L. D. S. 156, opponents 307. The total score of the 'Varsity for the season gives us 621 points as against 301 for opponents.(208) |
