Show The Order of the GleamHE Order of the Gleam is nearing the successful completion of its second year. The aims of this Society-to promote better scholarship among women students, and to encourage them in original work, especially writing-have been generously accomplished. The usual weekly programs, ranging from short stories to scientific papers, have been varied by discussions of the drama and talks upon travels. Through the kindly assistance of Mr. F. W. Reynolds, Miss De Laney and Mr. Leo Marshall, a play of purely literary merit, Yeat's "Land of the Heart's Desire" was successfully produced. So enthusiastic have become the women students for composition, that the Department of English is all but buried beneath the bulky themes of ambitious writers. Some members of the Society have obtained publishers for their work. The Order of the Gleam has become an active force among the women students of the University; though the best influence exerted by it in behalf of certain ideals has emanated from the character of its membership rather than from any publicity given those ideals. The Society has not been able to- admit all applicants lest it become too unwieldy for effective work. There is a waiting list, however, upon which all efficient women students, especially those interested in writing, may have their names entered for future consideration. Since there is a promising interest taken in writing, the need of a magazine devoted to the publication of students' literary efforts was felt by both the Scribblers' Club and the Order of the Gleam. Thus "The University Pen" organized through the capable efforts of Mr. A. B. Roberts and jointly supported by these societies, certain members of the faculty and progressive students, came into existence. The prospects are that this magazine will remain permanently in our University, in which case, the Scribblers' Club and the Order of the Gleam will have made a positive achievement.MembersEleanor Prout, President.Thenia Chilcott Myrtle Decker Margaret Watson Katherine Palm Ethel Connolly Hazel Edwards Dale Havenor Laura Gardner Margaret Johnson Bess Judd Vivian Klink Maude L'Amphere Margaret Latimer Welthea Learned Millicent Lyons Lurine Miles Nora PendletonJennie Ryan Mary Storer Vivian Tolhurst Alice Hurst Mildred Jensen hortense lockhart Marguerite Mansfield Margaret Parsons Marie Scobee Nora Sheckell Marian Van Pelt Leda Wallace Louise Hartwell Nora Noall Erma Pendleton Gladys Stewart Miriam Thurman Venice Farnsworth(148) |
