The Arts have thought the Engineers to be a heterogeneous conglomeration of uncult-youred barbarians ever since the primeval scrap when the Engineers so thoroughly and conscientiously wiped up the campus with the anatomy of the "refined" portion of the student body. This year the Engineering Society has had a series of lectures by prominent engineers from all over the State; and the general learned atmosphere of the lecture room made the library ozone seem like Saltair on Retail Clerks' night. The Arts would have been astounded with the general situation. There was really a semblance of law and order at those meetings. The most atrocious act by this disreputable organization was to murder the old Senior pin and construct a new one. The queer part of it was that the public agreed that the artistic taste of the Engineers put the Arts in the class of wax flowers under a bell jar and horsehair furniture. All this was bad enough, but when the Engineers' banner waved from the flagpole and invited the rest of the school (faculty excepted), to a general annihilation, there was no demonstration by the Arts. It was evident that they didn't want to be annihilated. Funny bunch, eh?The Society will publish a book soon for the benefit of some who believe that all Engineers smoke, chew, drink, gamble, swear, lie, steal, eat raw beefsteak and carry concealed weapons. The book will contain a full account of the proceedings in the darkest, "spookiest" corners of the Physical building. It will be shown that cannibalism does not exist there. Paradoxical as it may seem the "culture bug" has bitten the Engineering Society and culture (say cult-your), is rapidly spreading and thinning out the organization.(110) |
