Show Dean CummingsHEN Professor Cummings came from the east in 1892 to take up his work in the University of Utah he brought with him a vigorous college spirit which soon made itself manifest in all college activities. Athletics, especially, acquired new life through his earnest efforts, and in appreciation of them he came to be called the "Father of Athletics in Utah." During his years of service as Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Professor Cummings has come closely in touch with the majority of college students, and, through his complete sympathy with the aims and mistakes of youth, he has won an enviable place in their hearts. But he has not limited his activity to the University. His name has become widely known through his researches in archaeological fields. His discoveries during the few summers he has spent in investigations in southern Utah have added much to the world's knowledge of the ancient inhabitants of this inter-mountain country. This year Professor Cummings has spent in Europe, devoting himself to study and research in his chosen field. The University has missed him and she looks forward to his return, when, with renewed energy he will resume his efforts toward a bigger and better University.(6) |
