Show Prostate Cancer (ICD-9Code: 185.0-185.9) (1995 Total Deaths in Utah = 218) Utah's incidence rate for prostate cancer continues to be significantly higher than the rate for the United States. Between 1981 and 1990, Utah's incidence rate showed a 57% increase while the national rate rose by only 43%. Utah prostate cancer mortality rates have remained similar to the national rates since 1981. There has been a dramatic increase in prostate cancer incidence since 1990. Improvements in the diagnosis of prostate cancer, including the introduction of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test may account for much of this increase. Increase use of other screening methods may also have contributed to this increase in incidence. Despite the disparity between Utah and U.S. in incidence, the gap is small in mortality. This may point to earlier detection and treatment in Utah than in the U.S. as a whole. Table 34 Sources: *US: mortality and incidence: SEER Cancer Statistics. [Online].
