Show Violent Crime Violence has become a major cause of death, stress, and injury in our society today1. Therefore, it is an area of concern for public health officials and is a priority area in the Healthy People 2000 initiative in national health promotion. As defined by the U.S. Department of Justice in its Uniform Crime Reports2, "violent crime" refers to any of four offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. Except for rape, Utah rates of violent crime tend to be significantly lower than national rates. In Table 89. Violent Crime Rates* terms of rape, Utah exceeded the national rate in 1991 and has continued to report higher rates of rape since. It is difficult to determine whether increased rates reflect an actual increase in the frequency of rape, or an increase in the reporting of rape due to an increase in litigation and support for victim's rights. Regardless, the data indicate the need to pay further attention to the issue of rape in Utah. Murder Rape Robbery Aggravated Assault Year Utah U. S.
