Show Drug Use Among Students (Utah School Drug Survey) These figures are collected anonymously by school officials for students in grades 7 through 12. Due to changes in the law, officials now have to receive a parent's or guardian's permission to ask students these questions. The most recent survey were conducted in 1997. Data from this survey was not available at the time of publication. Another pertinent fact to remember when reviewing these data is that it does not include students who were absent or school drop outs; therefore, the figures may be lower than they ought to be for the equivalent age group in the general population. Since 1984, the percentage of Utah students reporting that they had used drugs (either ever or in the past month) appears to have stayed somewhat level or to have declined slightly depending on the drug. Although tobacco use in general appears to follow this trend, use of cigarettes in the past month is the only rate to have shown a steady increase since 1984. The most commonly used drugs by students in Utah and the U.S. are alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, inhalants, and amphetamines. Utah rates are typically lower for those who have ever tried a substance. While Utah students are less likely than their U.S. counterparts to ever try drugs, among Utah students who do use drugs a wide variety of substances is used. Utah rates for students who have used a substance in the past month are higher than U.S. rates for amphetamines, tranquilizers, cocaine, heroin, inhalants, and hallucinogens. Table 85.
