Show Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) (ICD-9Code: 042-044) (1995 Total Deaths from AIDS in Utah = 106) Both Utah and the nation have seen an increase in new AIDS cases from 1984 to 1995, although Utah's incidence rate remains below the nation's. The UtahiU.S. comparison shows that Utah has about one-third the rate of the nation in the number of newly reported cases of AIDS, although this number fluctuates somewhat from year to year. AIDS-related death rates are higher for the U.S. than for Utah. Death rates have also increased between 1987 and 1995 for both Utah and the nation. The surveillance case definition of AIDS was expanded to include four new conditions, effective Jan. 1, 1993. This has resulted in a rise in AIDS incidence rates and AIDS-related deaths in reports for subsequent years. Table 48.
